Now Senator John McCain wants his pay-TV a la carte. The Arizona Republican is readying legislation that would allow customers to purchase cable channels individually, and also has his sights set on protecting controversial broadcast TV streaming company Aereo. The details of the proposed bill are sketchy, but sources say the bill would give the FCC the power to strip the license of any broadcaster that tries for a cable model. Naturally, such a development would have huge ramifications for not only the pay-TV industry, but for broadcast TV—Fox and CBS have both suggested they might turn their networks to cable out of a fear of losing revenue dollars to Aereo. Under McCain’s proposed legislation their option to make such a move would be severely threatened.
McCain is expected to introduce the legislation as early as this week. Read more about it at The Los Angeles Times.
