Just in time for Mother’s Day on May 13, Masterpiece is bringing its new take on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women, to PBS.

The new version stars Oscar nominee Emily Watson as Marmee and Kathryn Newton as sisters Amy, Willa Fitzgerald as Meg, Maya Hawke as Jo, and Annes Elwy as Beth. Also starring are Oscar nominee Michael Gambon and Oscar winner Angela Lansbury.

Set against the backdrop of the Civil War with their beloved father off fighting, the story follows aspiring writer Jo and her gentle sisters Meg, Beth and Amy on their journey from childhood to adulthood. With the help of Marmee, the girls navigate what it means to be a young woman: from sibling rivalry and first love, to loss and marriage.

The adaptation comes from Call the Midwife‘s Heidi Thomas (Cranford, Upstairs Downstairs) and is directed by Vanessa Caswill (Thirteen, My Mad Fat Diary).
