Marvel Animation’s all-new Marvel’s Spider-Man will premiere on Disney XD in 2017, Marvel said Saturday at New York Comic-Con.

With Marvel’s current animated Spider-Man series (Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man) set to end in January 2017, the animation studio plans to pick up the story at the beginning, following Peter Parker as a teenager learning how to harness his super arachnid powers to save the universe.

“We are pretty early in Spidey’s career as we see him learning how to become Spider-Man,” said Stephen Wacker, VP of current series and development at Marvel. “Spider-Man is so new to the game, this is his first moment as a superhero. He doesn’t even have his costume yet,” Wacker added.

Indeed, a teaser from the pilot episode, showed to the Comic-Con audience, featured Peter, as a newly-minted Spider-Man, sporting a red and blue hoodie sweatshirt and sweatpants ensemble instead of his typical spidery spandex get-up.

In the opening sequence an awkwardly adolescent Spider-Man is attempting to rescue some citizens of New York City from some bad guys but as he’s ready to launch himself off a building and save the day, a pigeon lands on his head, to his embarrassment.

Next, an irate grandmother chases him off her roof, angrily waving a broom handle in the direction of the would-be hoodlum.

The series promises to explore many more teenage indignities for Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, whose constant physics calculations mid-heroics remind audiences that underneath that silvery spider web is a rather geeky young boy.

“We’ve been secretly nurturing Marvel’s Spider-Man for years now, so we are thrilled to finally announce it,” said Cort Lane, SVP Marvel animation and family entertainment. “The simple title reflects a back-to-basics approach—the story of an ordinary teen, Peter Parker, who suddenly finds himself with strange new powers and overwhelming responsibility,” Lane said, adding, “it’s just filled with heart and humor.”
