Netflix has set a December premiere date for its next original series, Marco Polo, and the company released first-look stills on Thursday. The period drama follows the famous explorer as he enters Kublai Khan’s court in 13th century China, a time “replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry.”




Italian actor Lorenzo Richelmy plays Marco Polo, and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu his love interest, Kokachin. Twin Peaks’ Joan Chen will star as Empress Chabi with Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan. Marco Polo, produced by The Weinstein Company, will be available in all Netflix territories on Dec. 12, 2014.
