“The things you do for love, right?”

When a brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, it becomes clear that his answer to that question (also famously uttered by Jamie Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones) is “anything” in Lifetime’s thriller You.

The show examines and upends the romance movie trope of the guy who will go to great lengths to get the girl, and Lifetime plays into that with a campaign that subverts classic love songs, starting with “I Want You to Want Me,” which is featured in the trailer.

Based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, You stars Penn Badgley as a stalker who uses the internet and social media to gather intimate details and get close to his crush, played by Elizabeth Lail. It quickly goes from sweet, to obsession, to what looks like some scary stalking as he quietly and strategically removes every obstacle—and person—in his way.

The series also stars Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry and Shay Mitchell, with a special guest appearance by John Stamos. It’s executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sera Gamble, Sarah Schechter, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo and Marcos Siega.

You premieres September 9 on Lifetime.
