Master of None’s Lena Waithe has teamed with rapper and producer Common for Showtime’s new series, The Chi, set and shot in the South Side of Chicago, which is also where the series gets its title.
The Chi stars Jason Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Ntare Guma Mbhao Mwine, Alex Hibbert, Yolanda Ross, Armando Riesco and Tiffany Boone.
Hibbert (Moonlight) stars as pre-teen Kevin who must step past the shattered illusions of his rough neighborhood in order to embrace childhood’s normal rites. Brandon (Mitchell) is a dreamer who makes his own nearly impossible leap of faith to succeed in life and love with girlfriend Jerrika (Boone). Emmett (Latimore) is a carefree teen thrust into complex responsibility with guidance from his mother Jada (Ross), and Ronnie (Mwine) is a drifter whose struggle to love and be loved calls into question his every pursuit.
Also recurring are Sonja Sohn, Jahking Guillory and Steve Williams.
Elwood Reid executive produces along with Waithe and Common. Aaron Kaplan executive produces along with Rick Famuyiwa, who also directed the pilot. Derek Dudley and Shelby Stone executive produce for Freedom Productions.
The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios. It premieres Sunday, January 7 at 10 p.m. ET.
