The Conference 2013 began with a rare opportunity for leaders and aspiring leaders within the PromaxBDA membership. PromaxBDA’s first Leadership Institute brought together executive mentors and mentees from the Executive Mentorship Program, as well as elite members and ambassadors for a rare event designed to instill a new mindset and provide practical tools to accelerate the leadership journey of each attendee.

Focused on self-knowledge and authenticity, the Institute kicked off with a keynote address from Eric Liu, inspirational leader, author and educator, and a former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton. Liu, the founder of Citizen University, authored “Guiding Lights: The People Who Lead Us Toward Our Purpose in Life” among other books, and presented a message of possibility and connection, built on the theme that there is power in being part of something larger than oneself. Liu’s appearance was made possible thanks to a sponsorship from Lifetime.

Following Liu, Dan Quinn, an executive consultant for YSC, and Maisie Sather, a consultant for YSC, led attendees in a collaborative experience designed to enhance motivational skills and leverage authenticity. “Truly authentic people exude confidence without even trying,” Dan Quinn told Daily Brief. “They have that quality that inspires and energizes others effortlessly. When an individual understands and appreciates who they are and what their purpose is, they inevitably have a strong, genuine presence, an easier time navigating complexity, and they motivate others to take action – qualities that we believe are the foundation for exceptional leadership.”

Each attendee worked to define what makes them personally distinctive as a leader, learning to integrate self-expression and courage into conversations and leaving “with a renewed sense of who they are and how they can build on that to get to the next level of their leadership potential,” said Quinn. “Participants will be guided through exercises to help them uncover and articulate their core. They will practice how to bring it to life and create a plan for implementing their awareness into practical, day-to-day interactions. We will strip off the layers of who we think we are, who we want others to think we are, and get down to our bare essence.”
