“When I first got off the bus years ago, I had the strangest feeling…that I’d come home.”
Now, after leaving everything behind to pursue her career, Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) is returning to her home at 28 Barbary Lane in Netflix’s reboot of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City.
The miniseries, which initially appeared on the U.K.’s Channel 4 in 1993, is based on Maupin’s novels of the same name. It follows Mary Ann as she returns to present-day San Francisco, reunites with her adult daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), and reacclimates to her life among her chosen family and the vibrant LGBTQ community at Barbary Lane.
Linney, Gross, Olympia Dukakis, and Barbara Garrick will reprise their roles from the original. Page, Murray Bartlett, Charlie Barnett, Josiah Victoria Garcia and May Hong join the cast as series regulars.
Tales of the City is a Working Title Television and NBCUniversal International studios production for Netflix. Lauren Morelli serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Maupin, Linney, and director Alan Poul. Andrew Stearn, Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner executive produce for Working Title.
