Maybe it is the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world.

13-year-old Kamala Khan (newcomer Iman Vellani) is Disney Plus’ latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 2013, Marvel Comics introduced the Pakistani-American teenager who idolizes Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). By the very next year, she had evolved into Ms. Marvel – the first Muslim superhero to get her own Marvel comic.

Marvel Studios is bringing that story to Disney Plus with new series Ms. Marvel, which debuts June 8. The character will also appear in Marvel Studios’ movie, The Marvels, premiering in 2023.

The above trailer is shot through with motion graphics inspired by comics and set to the familiar strains of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.”

Season one is composed of six episodes. Bisha K. Ali is executive producer and head writer, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Meera Menon, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah direct.
