“Is this what freedom looks like?” Elisabeth Moss’ Offred asks from behind bars at the beginning of Hulu’s season two trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale.
“What will happen when I get out? There probably is no out. Gilead is within you.”
That last phrase is an expression Aunt Lydia Ann Dowd) will say often as the characters “will fight against—or succumb to—this dark truth,” according to Hulu.
“My name is June Osborne, and I am free,” Offred says at the end of the trailer, but it’s open to interpretation as to what that really means.
Season two will focus on Offred’s pregnancy, and her fight to free her future child from the horrors of Gilead, the dystopian, totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Faced with a plunging birthrate, Offred and other fertile women are forced into sexual servitude as handmaids in desperate attempt to repopulate the world.
The Handmaid’s Tale is adapted from the novel by Margaret Atwood, and the author will continue to play a role in the direction of the series, showrunner Bruce Miller told The Hollywood Reporter.
While season one relied heavily on the plot itself, season two will pull from the epilogue.
“People talk about how we’re beyond the book, but we’re not really,” Miller told THR. “The book starts, then jumps 200 years with an academic discussion at the end of it, about what’s happened in those intervening 200 years. It’s maybe handled in an outline, but it’s still there in Margaret’s novel. We’re not going beyond the novel; we’re just covering territory she covered quickly, a bit more slowly.”
The first two episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale season two will premiere April 25 on Hulu.
