Jason Ritter (Parenthood) stars as a reluctant hero in ABC’s upcoming series Kevin (Probably) Saves the World.
The series features Ritter as Kevin Finn, a cluelessly selfish man on a downward spiral who returns home to stay with his widowed twin sister (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Once Upon a Time) and niece.
His first night there, Yvette (Kimberly Hébert Gregory, Vice Principals), a celestial warrior for God, appears to present him with a mission to save the world.
The series is from executive producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (Marvel’s Agent Carter, Resurrection, Reaper).
At the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fazekas told journalists the show would sidestep the “Magical Negro” trope of a black supporting character whose primary purpose is to help a white protagonist when it comes to the character Yvette.
Cristela Alonzo was originally cast for the role, but creators changed their mind when shooting the pilot.
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World premieres October 3 at 10 p.m.
