A theater marquee promoting the 1972 flick Deep Throat helps set the scene in HBO’s trailer for The Deuce, exploring the rise of the porn industry in New York.

Packed with sex and guns, nightclubs and booze, cops and gambling, the drama created by crime novelist George Pelecanos and The Wire’s David Simon also dives into the growing prominence of HIV, the real estate boom and crackdowns on the adult film trade.

The series stars James Franco, who plays a dual role as twin brothers: struggling bartender Vincent Martino, and gambler Frankie Martino, who become fronts for the mob in Times Square.

Maggie Gyllenhaal also stars as Eileen “Candy” Merrell, an independent prostitute who transitions into the porn industry.

Other cast includes Margarita Levieva, Gary Carr, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Emily Meade, Dominique Fishback, Chris Coy, Michael Rispoli and Natalie Paul.

Pelecanos and Simon executive produce along with Nina K. Noble.

The eight-episode series premieres September 10 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
