“Murderess is a strong word to have attached to you. Murderer is merely brutal. I’d rather be a murderess than a murderer if those were the only choices.”
So says Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon), a poor young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who was convicted of murder in 1843.
Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, Alias Grace tells a fictionalized version of Marks’ story, who, along with stable hand James McDermott (Kerr Logan), was convicted of murdering their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery (Anna Paquin).
While Marks spent 30 years in prison, she was ultimately exonerated.
Alias Grace is written and produced by Sarah Polley (Looking for Alaska, Take this Waltz, Away from Her) and directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol). The series is a co-production with Halfire Entertainment, CBC and Netflix, and will first be broadcast on Canada’s CBC before moving to Netflix. The series is executive produced by Polley, Harron and Noreen Halpern.
It drops Friday, Nov. 3, on Netflix.
