They don’t call it the city of broken dreams of nothing.
In this 2013 spot for the series Hollywood: Sueños Destrozados (Hollywood: Broken Dreams), Investigation Discovery strings together quick cuts highlighting memories of a woman’s life—from being pushed on a swing as a child, to her journey to become a success in Los Angeles.
“For this spot [we] wanted to put together key moments that would show a girl’s dream of making it in Hollywood becoming a reality, and then getting lost in the darkness that lurks behind the glitz and glam,” Investigation Discovery said when submitting the spot to the 2013 PromaxBDA Latin America Awards.
The network chose to shoot the promo from a first-person perspective:
“[We] wanted the viewer to feel like they are in the girl’s shoes, producing a feeling of hope that would later on get crushed.”
The result is lighthearted and enchanting—up until the moment it delivers the punch, literally. The fact that it’s both powerful and inexpensive won it a gold in the “something for nothing” category. It was produced in-house for just $2,500 which included a flight to Los Angeles, editing, graphics, original sound and score and the actors—who were all friends and employees.
