Leading up to PromaxBDA’s big international conference, we are taking a look at the speakers, sessions and panels that make the event memorable. Dan Bragg, SVP of marketing at Science, speaks about his upcoming session, his career and his advice to industry up-and-comers. Don’t miss Bragg’s session at this year’s conference: “The PromaxBDA Hot Spots Showcase.”
Speaker Name: Dan Bragg
Title: SVP, Marketing, Science
Could you summarize your session in 5 words? A cohesively compelling creative collection.
What other speaker are you most interested in seeing at PromaxBDA: The Conference this year? Mark Valentine. He’s very inspiring.
How do you watch television content? I DVR everything except sports, and still mostly watch at home on TV. A fair percentage is streamed through Apple TV and when I travel, I’ll watch on my iPad. My kids are all about streaming, and it’s fascinating to see the seismic shift that’s taking place.
What do you think is the most important trait of a leader? Letting go. I think it’s the hardest thing to do and one of the most beneficial to the people who work for you. If you want to really see what a person’s creative or strategic skills are like, they have to be able to run free. My leadership philosophy is to help inspire, guide, and visualize the possibilities of the brand potential and the success of each piece of creative that hits the air… then let the people you hired execute on that idea. I trust the people who work for me and respect their talents enough to partner with me and make each project stand out no matter what the budget.
What is your greatest career achievement so far? I’d say my current job and working with an amazing group of people to completely re-imagine Science as a cool, unexpected destination that entertains, surprises and completely blows your mind. Having a ton of creative freedom reaps a lot of rewards. After that, being able to oversee the redesign of the Discovery Channel logo and seeing the “World is Just Awesome” campaign come to life. And finally, helping lead Showtime’s “No Limits” brand campaign and seeing that network emerge from a movie acquisition channel to an edgy, original content provider.
What one piece of advice would you give to an up-and-comer in this industry? Be a sponge. You’ll have good people as well as horrible people that you’ll have to work for and all of them have something to offer. Use it wisely and a good leader you will become.
How did you get your start in this industry? In college I did an internship with a local cable company and got to shoot bumpers for their super cheesy late night talk show called “Portland Tonight.”
