“He shot himself in the chest, as he was handcuffed … Something is just not right about the story.”
So says the White family in Investigation Discovery’s Sugar Town, which digs into the controversial death of Victor White that put the town of New Iberia, La., on the map. With exclusive access to the White family, the film takes a deep look at a racially divided town and the family’s struggle in their fight for justice against a corrupt sheriff.
ID developed an on-air campaign to promote the latest documentary in the ID Films franchise, showcased in the above spot “Up in Flames.”
New Iberia serves as an influential character in the film, while music and design and used to develop a sense of place in the campaign. Graphics feature the Louisiana state flag with a pelican nurturing its young and the state motto, “Union Justice Confidence,” foreshadowing the White family’s search for truth.
Meanwhile, text on screen speaks to the heart of the story. And underlying tensions that their son’s death reveal are metaphorically visualized through a smoldering flame that erupts into a full blaze among the fields responsible for New Iberia’s racial divide.
Sugar Town premieres August 6 at 8 p.m. on Investigation Discovery.
