Many know Idris Elba for his more serious roles in shows like Luther and The Wire. But in Netflix’s newest original series, Elba is putting his music, comedy and nanny skills to the test.
Turn Up Charlie, the streamer’s newest scripted comedy series, follows a DJ (Elba) and “eternal bachelor” desperately trying to rebuild his music career. After realizing he isn’t earning enough money as a wedding DJ, Charlie reluctantly begins working as a “manny”—or male nanny—for his famous best friend’s problematic daughter.
The trailer shows Charlie trying to get his life together as he turns tables, deals with difficult family members, and faces the conniving actions of the problem child. Elba, who was once a DJ before becoming a well-known actor, will also incorporate his real-life music skills into the show.
Elba and Gary Reich co-created Turn Up Charlie and serve as executive producers along with Tristram Shapeero. Frankie Hervey, Piper Perabo, and J.J. Feild also star in the eight-episode series.
