ABC’s TGIT lineup closed Thursday nights with Shonda Rhimes’ newest series, How to Get Away with Murder.

The show surpassed ratings expectations and became a social phenomenon, but to viewers’ bewilderment, ABC never got around to announcing a second season pickup.

So diehard How to Get Away with Murder fans got a pleasant surprise during Thursday’s tense two-hour season finale when ABC aired a spot announcing its fall return, with a promo simply called ““We’ll Be Back Next Season.” The finale event, featuring a major twist, averaged 9 million viewers for the night, handing ABC the win in Thursday’s 18-49 demo.
