Movies today are so laden with special effects it’s hard to tell what’s real from what’s been created by artists behind the scenes. But all of that craft came from somewhere, and Disney Plus’ six-part docu-series Light and Magic on George Lucas’ famed VFX shop, Industrial Light and Magic, tells that story.

When Lucas wrote Star Wars, he says in the above trailer, none of the special and visual effects that he needed to fully realize the movie had been created.

“I realized that I was going to have to start a company,” Lucas says, and Industrial Light and Magic was born.

When ILM first started, “we didn’t really know what we were doing. We were not movie people,” says one interviewee.

“George wanted a bunch of guys who didn’t know what was impossible,” says another.

The trailer includes clips of interviews with famous directors—such as Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and James Cameron—who have worked with ILM as well as scenes from some of the most famous movies to have come out of the shop, including Star Wars, E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

“Yes, we water-slided. Yes, we were immature. But no one worked harder. We were the Rebel Alliance,” says a third.

Light and Magic is directed by Lawrence Kasdan, who collaborated with Lucas on some of the filmmaker’s most famous scripts. Executive producers are Howard, Brian Grazer, Justin Wilkes, Kasdan, Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan.

All six episodes of Light and Magic drop on Disney Plus on July 27.
