Netflix teamed up with Mill+ for an opening sequence in the style of traditional Chinese ink painting.

Co-directors Ben Smith and co-director Bryce Wymer discuss the technique on the Mill+ blog here, describing how graceful drawings of the show’s themes of beauty, greed and betrayal are seen as abstract shapes slowly transforming into stark portraits and disturbing scenes. To create the look of an invisible artist creating the scenes, Mill+ used sumi-ink added to water paintings, all captured with an overhead projector.
