Discovery Science France’s simple but beautiful use of animation makes the above spot feel all the more heart-breaking.
In March 2011, a huge earthquake rocked Japan, followed by several aftershocks. The earthquake caused the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to shut down but the earthquake destroyed emergency generators that were cooling the reactors. Without the cooling, three of the reactors melted down and radioactive material was released.
Discovery Science France is doing a special on the meltdown, which is the world’s biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. On March 11, six years after the event occurred, Discovery Science France is returning to the scene to see how techniques have been adapted at the power plant to prevent such disasters in the future. The channel also is looking at how nature has repaired itself in the region.
