For the past seven seasons, Jeremy Wade, the adventurous host of Animal Planet’s River Monsters, has explored every imaginable river and lake on the globe, searching for the fiercest and most intriguing aquatic creatures.
In this special eighth season, Wade tackles a whole new realm: the legendary and mythical beasts of the ocean.
For the launch promo, Animal Planet’s marketing department turned once again to Boulder, Colo.-based creative partner Mrs. K. Together, they traveled to the Dominican Republic, home of Pinewood Studios, and the world’s newest (and warmest) FX water tank. The set included six one-ton tip tanks to create crashing spray and rain, lightning-effects equipment, wind and wave generators, and the world’s largest infinity pool. This, combined with Mr. Wade’s ability to act as his own stuntman, allowed Director Jeanne Kopeck to capture the action live and in-camera as is Kopeck’s wont.
Without the toys available at Pinewood’s new facility, these same shots would have required months of CG in order to create a dangerous storm. Supplemental 3D and 2D animation were used to create the giant tentacles and do other FX work.
River Monsters: Mysteries of the Ocean premieres on Animal Planet on Thursday, April 7 at 9/8 c.
