BET superimposed colorful motion graphics on top of still photography and video from last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests to create this spot promoting Tuesday’s BET Hip Hop Awards.

The motion graphics are an intentional callback to graffiti, often used as the language of protest.

“Designed with bold neon, spray paint textures and the mixing of black & white and color treatments, the campaign is at once mixtape, love letter and statement of resistance,” BET said in an email describing the campaign.

The network also used some of its idents to showcase hip-hop luminaries from several generations, including fashion icon Dapper Dan and performer and nominee Tobe Nwigwe.
