It’s the eve of 1985 in New York City; VHS is the primary medium for porn production and distribution, the city is taking over commercial sex properties, and the AIDS epidemic is on the rise.
It’s also the setting for the third and final season of The Deuce, premiering Sept. 9 on HBO.
HBO unveiled the season’s first teaser, which features ‘80s nostalgia to indicate the time jump, showcase the VHS-style filmmaking, and track the changes that have occurred since the ‘70s-themed first and second seasons.
The series stars James Franco as both Vincent and Frankie Martino—twin brothers who will face a series of destructive challenges in season three—and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Candy—a director struggling to maintain her artistic integrity in a quickly devolving industry.
The returning cast includes Margarita Levieva, Emily Meade, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Chris Bauer, Chris Coy and Michael Rispoli.
