As the 94th annual Academy Awards nears on Sunday, March 27, awards season has become fast and furious, with this past weekend seeing the Directors Guild Awards, BAFTA film awards and Critics Choice Awards handed out.
The DGA Awards, which took place in person on Saturday at the Beverly Hilton and were hosted by Judd Apatow, gave its top TV drama series award to Mark Mylod for directing the third season finale of HBO’s Succession, “All the Bells Say.” Succession took all five of the TV drama series nominations so it was guaranteed a win.
HBO also won on the comedy side, with Lucia Aniello winning for directing the pilot episode of Hacks, which she also executive produces with her husband, Paul W. Downs and their producing partner Jen Statsky as well as Michael Schur, David Miner and Morgan Sackett. Aniello also won the Emmy in this category for directing this same episode.
HBO won a third DGA award with Smriti Mundhra’s recognition for kids’ program Through Our Eyes on HBO Max.
Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) was named best director on a limited series for his work on Prime Video’s Underground Railroad.
Stanley Nelson was honored in the documentary category for Showtime’s Attica.
Saturday Night Live’s Don Roy King won his eighth DGA award for directing an episode of the late-night comedy sketch series featuring guest host Keegan-Michael Key.
Paul Dugdale won in variety/news/talk/specials for his work on CBS’ Adele: One Night Only.
Adam Vetri won in the reality-TV category for Discovery Channel’s Getaway Driver.
On the film side, Jane Campion was honored for her work on Netflix’s Power of the Dog, which cements her status as front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Campion was previously nominated for this award for The Piano, for which she was nominated for a best-picture Oscar and took home a statue for best original screenplay.
Maggie Gyllenhaal was named best first-time director for The Lost Daughter, also available on Netflix.
