With the 2020 Presidential Election approaching, HBO is pulling the curtain on the country’s vulnerable voting systems in Kill Chain: The Cyber War on America’s Elections.
The documentary follows Finnish hacker and cyber security expert Harri Hursti as he travels around the world to assess the current state of election security. Among the findings are simple, low-cost techniques that allow anyone to access voting technology, collect personal information, and tamper with the results.
The spot highlights these discoveries as Hursti interviews political figures like Senators James Lankford and Amy Klobuchar; cyber experts like Jeff Moss, founder of DEF Con and Black Hat; and anonymous hacker CyberZeist, who claims to have hacked Alaska’s vote-counting computer systems on election day 2016.
“I had full access. I could have changed any vote,” he says in the spot.
The film hails from Simon Ardizzone, Russell Michaels and Sarah Teale, the team behind HBO’s Hacking Democracy, and producer Michael Hirschorn. It premieres March 26 on HBO.
