Unbelievable footage of surfers catching what seem like insurmountable waves characterize the above trailer for HBO’s docuseries 100 Foot Wave.

The show returns to the extreme-surfer paradise of Nazaré, Portugal – with stops in Hawaii and California – to follow big-wave legend Garrett McNamara, his world-class surfing peers and some surprising newcomers as they all chase their dreams.

A decade after McNamara conquered his first record-breaking wave in 2011, the small coastal town of Nazaré, with its dramatic cliffs and epic offshore breaks, continues to attract the world’s best big-wave surfers. McNamara is expecting the birth of his third child with wife Nicole and is embracing a new career direction.

The new season features the return of Andrew “Cotty” Cotton, Justine Dupont, and CJ Macias as well as new player, local teenager Tony Laureano, who is trying to break into the sport’s upper echelons. All of them face serious injury and even mortal peril every time they step into the surf where some of the world’s biggest waves routinely break.

To bring viewers into the middle of the action and into the minds of the athletes, the series mixes interviews, verité scenes and incredible aerial, water-based and underwater footage from the show’s Emmy-winning cinematography team.

100 Foot Wave is directed and executive produced by Chris Smith and executive produced by Joe Lewis. Ryan Heller, Michael Bloom and Maria Zuckerman also executive produce for Topic Studios.

100 Foot Wave premieres Sunday, April 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO with episodes available to stream on HBO Max.
