HBO digs into the world of social-media influencers in documentary Fake Famous, from first-time director and veteran journalist Nick Bilton.

In the film, three wannabe influencers—aspiring actress Dominique, fashion designer Chris and real estate assistant Wylie—start out with small followings and work to grow them into huge followings by any means necessary—including buying followers and bots.

Along the way, they get their wish, which is to become internet famous with brands knocking on their doors to promote products on their platforms. But they also learn that influencer lifestyles are largely based on fantasies projected on social-media platforms, and particularly, Instagram.

Joining Bilton are New York Times technology reporter Taylor Lorenz; Liz Eswein of @newyorkcity; Bloomberg technology reporter Sarah Frier; Justine Bateman, author of “Fame: The Hijacking of Reality”; and more.

HBO Documentary Films’ in association with Consolidated Documentaries presents Fake Famous directed, written, and produced by Nick Bilton; produced by Annabelle Dunne and Mary Recine and executive produced by Graydon Carter. Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller executive produce for HBO along with senior producer Sara Rodriguez.

Fake Famous premieres Feb. 2 on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.
