HBO’s dark, moody trailer for season three of True Detective strikes a tone similar to the show’s acclaimed season one as Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali, Moonlight, Luke Cage) investigates a grisly crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks.

The story plays out across three separate time periods, focusing on Hays as a man with a haunted past as the unsolved mystery deepens over the decades.

“It was just a case when I caught it,” he says in the trailer. “I didn’t know it would be my last.”

The cast also includes Stephen Dorff (Blade), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Carmen Ejogo (Alien: Covenant), and Scoot McNairy (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

The series is created and executive produced by Nic Pizzolatto, and premieres January 13 on HBO.
