HBO released a new trailer for upcoming sci-fi series Westworld featuring previews of graphic sex and violence that has been met with controversy.
The network posted a mature version of the trailer (above) along with one without the graphic content:
Set to premiere October 2, the drama, based on the 1973 film written by Michael Crichton, is described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” The series stars Anthony Hopkins as an inventor who runs an adult amusement park populated by lifelike robots that include Evan Rachel Wood, along with Tessa Thompson and Ed Harris as androids.
Westworld is written by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest) and Lisa Joy, with J.J. Abrams as executive producer.
HBO has been adamant about including graphic content in the series, telling actors’ unions that the network wouldn’t back down, The Wrap reports.
Extras were asked to sign a sexually explicit casting contract agreeing to “perform genital-to-genital touching; have your genitals painted; simulate oral sex with hand-to-genital touching; contort to form a table-like shape while being fully nude,” and “other assorted acts that the project may require.”
A trailer released in June also raised eyebrows for featuring a scene depicting a massive orgy.
