HBO and BBC released the trailer for their new historical series, and the titular character is not afraid to raise a few eyebrows.
Set in the complex world of 1932 England, Gentleman Jack follows female landowner Anne Lister (Suranna Jones), a woman who is passionate about life and her pursuit to debunk societal expectations. The trailer shows her dressing head-to-toe in black, breaking the fourth wall, and unapologetically having same-sex relationships in a time where it was nearly unheard of.
The female-led series is based on Lister’s extensive personal diaries that were published in the 1980s. It is created, written, and directed by Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax), in addition to directors Sarah Harding (Vikings, Queer as Folk) and Jennifer Perrott (Doctor Who). Sophia Rundle (Bodyguard), Gemma Wheelan (Game of Thrones), Timothy West (Last Tango in Halifax), and Gemma Jones (God’s Own Country) co-star in the show.
Gentleman Jack debuts April 22 on HBO. It will air in the UK on BBC One sometime this spring, however, a date is to be announced.
