HBO Max brings Margaret Wise Brown’s classic children’s book The Runaway Bunny to life with an animated special featuring the music of Mariah Carey, Kelly Rowland, Rosanne Cash, Ziggy Marley, Kimya Dawson, Rufus Wainwright and Michael Kiwanuka.
Produced and directed by Amy Schatz, the special tells the story of a little baby bunny who wants to run away and his mother who reminds him she will always love him.
The special includes Mariah Carey’s new reinterpretation of “Always Be My Baby,” as well as Rowland performing Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” Cash singing “You Are My Sunshine,” and Marley crooning “What A Wonderful World,” among others. Narrator Tracee Ellis Ross performs “Song of the Runaway Bunny,” a never-before-released piece written by Brown and based on the Provençal love ballad that inspired the book.
“The Runaway Bunny is a timeless classic about youthful independence and the strength of a mother’s love,” said Billy Wee, SVP, original animation, HBO Max, in a statement. “Amy Schatz has lovingly brought this story to vivid life with an incredible group of collaborators.”
The Runaway Bunny was originally published in 1942 by HarperCollins Publishers and has sold more than 12 million copies. The special animates the illustrations of Clement Hurd with Brown’s poetry to tell the timeless story.
The animated special streams March 25 on HBO Max.
