HBO led the Broadcast Television Journalist Association’s 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards with 20 nominations for shows such as My Brilliant Friend, Sharp Objects, Barry and Succession, while FX came in second with 17 for series such as The Americans, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and Atlanta.

Amazon came in third in overall noms with 12, while Netflix and NBC tied with 11 each.

With nominations for the Golden Globes and WGA awards out last week, this year’s critical faves are gaining notice, although some of these shows were honored during last year’s Emmy cycle.

New to best-of lists are shows such as Amazon’s Homecoming, starring Julia Roberts, HBO’s My Brilliant Friend, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method and Showtime’s Escape from Dannemora, all of which dropped outside of the Emmy eligibility period.

FX’s Atlanta, which was mostly ignored by the Golden Globes, scored mentions as best comedy series, best actor for Donald Glover and best supporting actor for Brian Tyree Henry.

After also being snubbed by the Globes, NBC’s This Is Us, still broadcast TV’s biggest drama in its third season, scored two acting nods for Milo Ventimiglia and Justin Hartley, although Sterling K. Brown, a two-time Emmy winner for this role, was not nominated by either the Globes or by Critics Choice.

Besides being nominated best limited series, Escape from Dannemora, which was directed by Ben Stiller, did well in the acting categories, with four for Paul Dano, Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette and Eric Lange.

Other best limited series nominees are Amazon’s A Very English Scandal, starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, both of whom are also nominated; Netflix’s American Vandal; Assassination of Gianni Versace; Dannemora; Nat Geo’s Genius: Picasso and Sharp Objects.

HBO did particularly well in the made-for-TV movie category with four of the six nominations for Icebox, My Dinner with Hervé, Notes from the Field and The Tale. The other two nominations in the category went to NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert and Amazon’s King Lear.

The Critics’ Choice Awards nominate up to seven in each category and have more TV categories than the Golden Globes, allowing for more series and performances to be recognized.

Nominated for best drama series are FX’s The Americans and Pose, HBO’s My Brilliant Friend and Succession, BBC America’s Killing Eve, AMC’s Better Call Saul and CBS All Access’ The Good Fight.

Best comedy series are FX’s Atlanta, HBO’s Barry, NBC’s The Good Place, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method and One Day at a Time, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, ABC’s The Middle, which ended its run last season, and Pop’s Schitt’s Creek.

The Critics’ Choice Awards also give out awards for best feature films of the year. This year, The Favourite led with 14 nominations, including a best actress nomination for Olivia Colman and best supporting actress nominations for Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
