Daniel Northcott had been filming everything around him for almost his entire life, beginning when he got a hold of his father’s video camera when he was just seven years old. As he grew up, he captured his family and friends on film. He then began to experience the world through travel, visiting war zones and sacred sites, including a Mayan burial ground in Mexico. At many sites, he took a keepsake to remember it.

Northcutt’s world travels end abruptly when health problems send him home to Vancouver where he faces a dire prognosis. While he undergoes treatment for leukemia, he is haunted by the memory of an ancient Mayan curse so he goes on a quest to return everything he took before he runs out of time.

HBO original documentary Daniel – which was ultimately finished by his older sister, Erin – is crafted from more than 1,400 hours of vérité-style footage shot in 42 countries across four continents. The above trailer is set to The Cinematic Orchestra’s “To Build a Home.”

Daniel is directed by Daniel Westcott and produced by Erin Westcott, Jeff Waxman, Jennifer Madeloff, Dan Walder, Ricky Staub, Adam McKay and Kevin Messic. Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller are executive producers for HBO, while Tina Nguyen is senior producer.

Daniel premieres Wednesday, December 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
