Fall premieres continued on Tuesday night with Fox’s debut of John Stamos’ Grandfathered and Rob Lowe’s The Grinder.

Grandfathered led off at 8 p.m. to a 1.5 rating among primetime’s key demographic of adults 18-49 and 5.3 million viewers, while The Grinder followed up with a similar 1.5 and 4.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen’s fast national overnight ratings. The pair, starring the two veteran TV actors, led into Fox’s highly promoted new dramedy, Scream Queens, which fell 18% in its second outing to a 1.4 in the demo. Year to year, Scream Queens is improving the 9 p.m. time slot by 16%. Scream Queens, Tuesday night’s top scripted show among young women, showed significant growth when the live-plus-three numbers came in last week, and that trend is likely to continue.

That performance tied ABC for third place among the broadcast networks but lifted Fox 50% for the night and 88% in the 8-9 p.m. hour compared to last year at this time.

Meanwhile, ABC’s much-anticipated The Muppets dropped off 31% to a 2.0 in the demo and 5.8 million viewers, nearly a full point from its debut rating in the demo, but up 82% from last year at this time when Selfie was airing in the time slot. Fresh Off the Boat declined 11% from its season premiere to a 1.7, but improved the time slot by 89% versus Manhattan Love Story last year, while Agents of SHIELD returned to a 1.7, down 15% from last year’s premiere.

Unlike The Muppets, CBS’ Limitless held at its debut number with a 1.9 in the demo and 9.6 million viewers. Limitless also gained 53% in the live plus three numbers, marking a strong start for the show based on the movie starring Bradley Cooper.

NBC won the night with The Voice at a 3.6, followed by Neil Patrick Harris’ Best Time Ever at 10 p.m. at a 2.0.

Shows based on movies were a bit of a trend this fall, with Fox bringing Minority Report to TV. At a 0.9 in its second outing at 9 p.m. on Monday night, that show looks like an early contender for the cancellation pile.

Meanwhile, NBC’s Blindspot fell back to a 2.6 among adults 18-49 on Monday nights at 10 p.m., holding 84% of its 3.1 premiere audience. Blindspot also was the new show to see the most gains in the live-plus-three ratings, jumping 45% to a very strong 4.5 from an opening night 3.1.

Viewers who sampled CBS’ Life in Pieces in week one seemed to turn away in episode two, with that show declining 26% to a 2.0 on Monday at 8:30 p.m., following The Big Bang Theory.
