Concluding PromaxBDA: The Conference 2013, creatives, media leaders and industry veterans from around the globe gathered Thursday night to honor excellence in media marketing.
Comedian, actor, radio host, best-selling author and “the only man who can make the next three hours feel like two hours and 58 minutes,” Jay Mohr, hosted the event for the third consecutive year.
After an opening set by Mohr in which he riffed on life after children and the secret to a successful marriage (“similar hates”), the awards program kicked with a bang courtesy of the Special Project Award given to NBC Entertainment Marketing and Digital for its rousing “Brotherhood of Man” spot.
Later, Roger Hyde, SVP of creative services and brand integrity for DIRECTV and PromaxBDA Awards Committee chair, addressed the crowd. “Tonight concludes a gradual process of improvement to the awards,” he said, before screening a video presentation introducing attendees to the 2013 PromaxBDA Awards jury and jury chair Judy McGrath.
Earlier this year, PromaxBDA integrated the Promotion, Marketing and Design categories under two categories, North America Promotion, Marketing and Design, and Global Excellence Promotion, Marketing and Design. It also simplified the awards submission process and made its Muse statue the only award received by all winners (in the past there were two different types of statues up for grabs), thereby making it the gold standard for excellence, regardless of category.
From there, the awards came fast and furious as people popped in and out for open bar drinks courtesy of sponsor TV Guide.
Some of the night’s big winners included Buster, the Creative Agency of the Year, and FX, the North America Marketing Team of the Year, whose 2013 work included campaigns such as this one:
For Global Excellence, Bell Media Agency took Marketing Team of the Year while Ireland/Davenport received Creative Agency of the Year, for spots such as this one:
North America’s coveted Something for Nothing Award went to Science Channel’s “How it’s Made Promo for How it’s Made” and in Global Excellence, be sure to check out Chello Creative’s “Watch Whatever You Wish,” which took home gold for Best Work Never Seen:
In special award categories, the annual Ron Scalera Rocket Award went to Brian Sullivan for North America and Alejandro Abelanda for Global Excellence, while Mark Hamill, prolific voice actor, was honored with the 2013 Don LaFontaine Legacy Award for his work in TV, film and video game voice over and its integral role in marketing and promotion.
