Netflix’s new series GLOW, an acronym for “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work actress in 1980s Los Angeles who is thrust into the glitter and spandex world of a new part.
Although fictional, the female empowerment of the show is very real.
“This whole job has been totally female forward,” Brie sys in the featurette. “Our creators are women, our producers are women, 14 members of the cast are women.
The series features “a group of brave, beautiful misfits coming together and finding a place where they belong.”
The featurette goes behind the scenes to focus on the women doing their own stunts, the support they showed one another and how the show will resonate with viewers.
“Every women has a wrestling character sleeping inside of them, and I think that people are going to look at it and be like ‘that’s exactly how I felt in traffic this morning,’” says Debbie Eagan who plays Betty Gilpin, a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems.
The series also stars Marc Maron as Sam Sylvia, a washed up, B-movie director leading the group of women on a journey to wrestling stardom.
GLOW is created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds). Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive producers alongside Flahive and Mensch who are serving as showrunners.
The series premieres June 23 on Netflix.
