Even without the surprising snub of one of many critics’ top-ten TV show of the year, Atlanta, FX led Thursday’s Golden Globe nominations with 10.
Limited series, for which FX carved a new path on TV, boosted the cable network’s noms with four – the most of any show – for Ryan Murphy’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Gianni Versace was nominated best limited series, with Darren Criss nominated best lead actor in a limited series or TV movie and Edgar Ramirez and Penelope both scoring nods in the supporting TV actor categories. FX also managed mentions for the final season of its prescient spy drama, The Americans, and another Ryan Murphy-produced series, Pose.
HBO and Amazon tied behind FX with nine between them, while Netflix came in third with eight.
Unlike the Emmys, the Golden Globes honors only major categories and does not hand out awards for craft categories like costume design, make-up, casting and so forth. The Globes, which are selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has proven in recent years that it likes to make surprising selections and anoint promising newcomers, such as Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won the Globe for best TV comedy last year, is nominated again this year for its just-debuted second season and won the Emmy last year.
The Globes’ picks for best TV drama, besides the two FX series, are Netflix’s off-BBC Bodyguard, BBC America’s Killing Eve and Amazon’s Homecoming. On the comedy side, nominees are the aforementioned Maisel, HBO’s Barry, NBC’s The Good Place, Showtime’s Kidding and Netflix’s The Kominsky Method.
Of note, is that of those ten series, only one – The Good Place – airs on broadcast television. Broadcast’s big entry in the past two years, NBC’s This Is Us, failed to snag any nominations this year.
Besides American Crime Story, the other nominated limited series are TNT’s The Alienist; Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, directed by Ben Stiller; HBO’s Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams, who nominated as best actress in a limited series and best supporting actress in a movie for Vice; and Amazon’s A Very English Scandal, starring Hugh Grant.
Best drama actors are Ozark’s Jason Bateman, Homecoming’s Stephan James, Bodyguard’s Richard Madden (best known as King of the North Rob Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones), Pose’s Billy Porter and The Americans’ Matthew Rhys.
Best drama actresses are Outlander’s Caitrionia Balfe, Homecoming’s Julia Roberts, Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss, Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh and The Americans’ Keri Russell.
On the comedy side, best actors are Who is America’s Sacha Baron Cohen and Kidding’s Jim Carrey, with both shows airing on Showtime; The Kominsky Method’s Michael Douglas; Atlanta’s Donald Glover and Barry’s Bill Hader.
Best comedic actresses are The Good Place’s Kristen Bell, Murphy Brown’s Candice Bergen, GLOW’s Alison Brie, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan (last year’s winner in the category) and Will & Grace’s Debra Messing.
Nominee Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg will host the 76th Annual Golden Globes when the show airs Sunday, Jan. 6 on NBC.
