It may or may not be a coincidence that FX decided to air a five-episode marathon of its surprise hit The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story on the heels of a TMZ report that the knife that was likely used by O.J. Simpson to kill Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman had been dug up on Simpson’s former Brentwood estate. But what does it matter? What better time to get people to tune in to the show that many critics are calling the best thing on TV right now?

Viewers who wanted to play catch up either had to stay up late or set their DVRs: FX started the marathon with episode one at 10 p.m. on FX on Saturday night and ran it without commercial interruption through 2:10 a.m., although people on the West Coast with satellite TV had it easier: the event started at 7 p.m. and ran through 11:10 p.m.

The series — which is full of riveting stunt casting, from John Travolta as the arch Robert Shapiro to Sarah Paulson as beleaguered prosecutor Marcia Clark — returns Tuesday, March 8, at 10 p.m. for episode six, “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia,” which offers a look into Clark’s own personal struggles during the tumultuous case that had the eyes of the nation glued to their TV screens.

The People v. O.J. Simpson is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Scott Alexander, Larry Kraszewski and Brad Falchuk. Produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions, the 10-episode series is based on Jeffrey Tobin’s book, The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson.
