Futurama, the animated series from Simpsons creator Matt Groening that ran on Fox for five seasons and on Comedy Central for two, is returning as a mobile game, Variety reported Wednesday.
The show’s original writers, cast and animators are collaborating with the game creators on the project, called “Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow.” Jam City’s TinyCo division is developing the game under a pact with 20th Century Fox’s interactive division, working closely with Futurama animators Rough Draft Studios to ensure the game looks and feels much like the series. Futurama told the story of a pizza-delivery guy, Philip J. Fry (voiced by Billy West), who accidentally freezes himself and wakes up 1,000 years in the future. There, he picks up where he left off, snagging a job at inter-galactic delivery company Planet Express, where he meets up with Leela (Katey Sagal) and Bender (John DiMaggio).
It’s not the first time Futurama has been turned into a game: In late 2015, Germany’s Wooga launched a match-four puzzle game based on the series called “Futurama: Game of Drones.”
“Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow” will be available across Apple’s, Google’s and Amazon’s app stores. To be notified about the game’s launch, sign up at YouWillPlayFuturama.com.
Groening’s other show, The Simpsons, also has been turned into a mobile game, the wildly successful “The Simpsons: Tapped Out,” which was developed by EA Mobile. “Tapped Out” is a city-building game in which a distracted Homer actually melts down Springfield in a nuclear power plant accident and has to rebuild it with the help of his inexplicably brilliant daughter, Lisa, and other characters from the series. Since its release in 2012, the game has generated $130 million in revenue, according to EA.
