Fox’s dark thriller ”Sleepy Hollow,” the first major broadcast premiere out of the gate this fall, is already getting a second season. In an announcement Thursday, Fox pointed to delayed viewing and its popularity with time-shifted viewers as the reason for the season pickup.
“The show has proven to be a risk well worth taking – it’s a conceptual blast unlike anything else on television and it all holds together with inventive writing and a fantastic cast,” said Fox‘s chairman of entertainment, Kevin Reilly, in a statement.
“Sleepy Hollow’s” series premiere garnered more than 13 million viewers with Live +3 ratings, and when added to streaming numbers on Fox.com and Hulu, that number jumped to 22 million. The third week of its run also retained most of its audience, holding on to 97% of last week’s viewership in 18-49 demographics.
Brief Take: Delayed viewing is having more of an impact on the fate of new series. “Sleepy Hollow” is another example of how same-day ratings reports are no longer the sole consideration in a show’s success or failure.
