Fox released a trailer for upcoming event series Shots Fired that examines the aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small town in North Carolina.

The 10, one-hour episodes focus on a black police officer who shoots an unarmed white college student, which triggers a national investigation starring Stephen James as a federal prosecutor and Sanaa Lathan as a federal investigator.

Meanwhile, the neglected murder of a black teen is brought to light, re-opening wounds that threaten to tear the town apart. The cast also includes Helen Hunt, Richard Dreyfuss, Stephen Moyer.

Shots Fired tackles the racial divide from all perspectives, according to Fox, and examines the public debate and social unrest attached to such events. While the main incident on the show is about the death of a young white man, it also addresses police brutality toward the black community.

Fox greenlit the 10-episode series in December 2015.

Written and executive produced by husband and wife team Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, Shots Fired stems from their sons’ reactions surrounding the 2012 incident involving unarmed black man Trayvon Martin, 17, who was fatally shot by a white neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., and unarmed black man Michael Brown, 18, who was fatally shot by a white police officer in 2014, and whose death triggered violent protests in Ferguson, Mo., and across the country, spurring the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Trying to explain to them what was going on … this was a way for us to speak to all that,” Prince-Bythewood told Buzzfeed.

Prince-Bythewood is also directing, and Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo serve as executive producers.

Shots Fired is scheduled to premiere in the spring of 2017.
