Fox took a risk with its new pre-superhero show, Gotham, hoping that fans would latch on to the show before it even premiered in order to create their own version of its epic trailer. And boy, did that risk pay off.

Fans turned in their own takes on scene after scene from the original cinematic trailer, using any means at their disposal: live action, animation, simple drawings, stop-motion, a surprising amount of fruit and vegetables, even re-creating the Gotham logo. Contestants stepped into scenes as the Penguin, Jim Gordon and other Gotham characters, remaking the video in every last detail.

The fan-made trailer was part of an early push by Fox to promote the upcoming Batman series, reaching out to fans this July to create their own versions of scenes from the show’s 60-second trailer and send in the results.

The contest was a partnership with user-generated content company SendUs. Fans were encouraged to send in either a short clip or the entire trailer re-created through whatever technique they chose, which resulted in a mixed-media trailer that debuted online Friday. The fan-made version of the trailer will make its on-air debut Thursday, Sept. 11 during a repeat of Sleepy Hollow.
