For ABC’s Castaways, 12 individuals are stranded on tiny islands in Indonesia without knowing that other people in their same circumstances are out there. And unlike CBS’ Survivor, where contestants are voted off, the only way to get off the island is to quit or persevere long enough to be rescued.

As dramatic situations unfold on an expanse of islands in the South Pacific, the series flashes back to the real lives of each participant in documentary fashion, revealing the lives they left behind.

The series’ 12 castaways are Angel Alvarenga, 20; Terry Allen, 62; Eric Brown, 31; Sawyer Brown, 30; Tim Burke, 50; Robbie Gibbons, 42; Reshanna Hearvy, 24; Matt Jaskol, 32; Krichelle Kerbow, 25; Richard Rogers, 35; Kenzi Whittington, 24; and Tracee Wnetrzak, 41.

Castaways is produced by Nomad Entertainment with Grant Kahler (Discovery’s Alaska: The Last Frontier and Madhouse, History’s Alone and The Selection) serving as showrunner.

Castaways premieres Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10 p.m., after the season-five premiere of Bachelor in Paradise.
