At first glance, Showtime’s latest drama, The Affair, seems like a basic story often told: married man meets attractive woman, has an affair, heartbreak ensues.

But this story, written by Sarah Treem, and Hagai Levi, lets us know early on that it’s about more than romance gone wrong.

This first look at the show’s main titles—scored with an original song by songstress Fiona Apple—highlights the series’ drama, emotion and frequent misdirection. The show is set in the beach community of Montauk, Long Island, and images of sand and sea overlay scenes from the show.

The Affair stars Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Joshua Jackson and Maura Tierney, and premieres Sunday, Oct. 12 on Showtime.
