While telling a story about a futuristic western-themed amusement park where guests are able to satisfy their every whim, the cast, creators and producers of HBO’s new drama Westworld explain how the series explores overarching questions about humanity in HBO’s latest featurette.

“When you open it up there are these emotional questions that talk about our deepest fears, our greatest passions and how we behave when those are challenged,” says Executive Producer J.J. Abrams.

Based on the 1973 movie of the same name written and directed by Michael Crichton, trailers suggest that while the theme park was developed with gratuitous satisfaction in mind, something goes deadly wrong.

Creator and Executive Producer Jonathan Nolan describes the show as “a classic full-boat western meets a science-fiction film.”

Featuring artificial intelligence with so much sophistication they seem human, the series examines what happens when humans are able to create their own realities and live without limits, supposedly consequence-free.

“If the simulation were immersive enough, would you start discovering things about yourself that you didn’t want to know?” Nolan asks.

On that note, the series has come under some scrutiny for its graphic content, such as a past trailer with a scene depicting an orgy, and extras signing a sexually explicit casting contract that includes nudity and genital touching.
