In case television’s domination of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con didn’t clue you in, comic book superheroes are having a moment on broadcast television.
Variety on Wednesday runs down the characters that are going to be vying for viewers’ attention, with both Gotham (Fox) and The Flash (CW) coming out of the gates as strong audience favorites.
The trade pointed out that both are “permanent fixtures” atop their Digital Audiences Ratings chart, which measures social media and Wikipedia buzz.
In fact, both series are “on a different order of magnitude” than competing shows thanks to rabid promo viewing and strong Facebook engagement.
At ABC, Marvel is rolling out another comic-book character to television screens, but fans will have to wait until midseason. Agent Carter comes on as a bridge between the two halves of the Agents of SHIELD season.
NBC’s new foray into the world of comic book heroes comes in the form of Constantine, which the network hopes will pair well with Grimm to create a genre block to entice fanboys and fangirls to stay home on Friday nights.
Of course, a few returning heroes, such as Arrow, and the above-mentioned Agents, will also be competing for attention.
