The story goes: Executive Producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss, friends for more than 17 years, had lunch with George R.R. Martin, guessed who Jon Snow’s real mother was, and the author was sold.
The story of how HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is slightly more complicated than that, but Benioff and Weiss tell the rest in a 5-minute video above. After reading the books, the two writers met with the fantasy author for lunch and mentioned taking the show to HBO, to which Martin replied: “I never imagined it anywhere else.” They then just had to pitch the “crazy undertaking” to HBO, which became a problematic pilot and later series that requires more than 250 cast members and 100 locations.
Season 4 debuts on HBO this Sunday, April 6.
