Headed into the 95th annual Academy Awards, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was named outstanding movie at the 34th annual Producers Guild Awards on Saturday, February 25 at the Beverly Hilton.
That puts Everything, Everywhere, All at Once at the top of the favorites’ list to win best picture at the Oscars on Sunday, March 12. According to the PGA, “since its inception, the PGA has predicted 23 of the 33 winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture.”
Producers of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once are Jonathan Wang, Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Kwan and Scheinert are also considered leading contenders to win best director come Oscar time.
Guillermo del Toro’s animated Pinocchio had a big weekend, scoring both the PGA win for animated theatrical motion pictures and five Annie Awards, including best feature and best director, making Pinocchio the lead contender to win best animated film headed into the Oscars.
HBO’s The White Lotus took home the trophy for best drama, or officially, the “Normal Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Drama.” The White Lotus, which in season two was set in Sicily, Italy, is produced by Mike White, David Bernad, Mark Kamine, Heather Persons and John M. Valerio. White also created, writes and directs the series.
FX’s The Bear, a half-hour episode series if not really a comedy, was named best comedy, winning the “Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Comedy.” Producers are Joanna Calo, Josh Senior, Christopher Storer, Hiro Murai, Rene Gube and Tyson Bidner.
Other TV winners included Hulu’s The Dropout, which won outstanding producer of limited or anthology series television. Producers are Elizabeth Meriwether, Katherine Pope, Michael Showalter, Jordana Mollick, Rebecca Jarvis, Taylor Dunn, Victoria Thompson, Liz Heldens, Liz Hannah, Hilton Smith, Dan LeFranc, Amanda Seyfried, Hilary Bettis and Megan Mascena. The Roku Channel’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, starrig Daniel Radcliffe, was named outstanding producer of televised or streamed motion pictures with producers Whitney Hodack, Mike Farah, Joe Farrell, Lia Burman, Max Silva and Yankovic.
CNN’s canceled Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy took home the trophy for outstanding producer of non-fiction television, with producers Tom Barry, Adam Hawkins, Eve Kay, Tucci, Francesco Ficarra, Shauna Minoprio, Robin O’Sullivan and Fiona Cleary.
HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which has dominated the Emmys since its debut in 2014, having won 26 Primetime Emmys, won for outstanding producer of live entertainment, variety, sketch, standup and talk television. Producers on Last Week Tonight are Oliver, Tim Carvell, Liz Stanton, Jon Thoday, James Taylor, Jeremy Tchaban, Catherine Owens, Whit Conway, Kaye Foley, Laura L. Griffin, Christopher McDaniel, Kate Mullaney, Matt Passet, Megan Peck Shub, Wynn Van Dusen, Marian Wang and Charles Wilson.
Lizzo, who just won the Grammy for Album of the Year, scored another win for outstanding producer of game and competition television for Prime Video’s Lizzo’s Watch Out for The Big Grrls. Producers are Lizzo as well as Makiah Green, Kevin Beisler, Julie Pizzi, Farnaz Farjam, Myiea Coy, Kimberly Goodman, Glenda N. Cox, Alana Balden
CNN and HBO Max paired up to grab another PGA award for documentary motion picture Navany, about the famous Russian dissident, produced by Odessa Rae, Diane Becker, Melanie Miller and Shane Borris.
Outstanding sports program went to HBO’s Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off, while outstanding children’s program also went to HBO for season 52 of Sesame Street.
Special honors were doled out during the evening, including awarding Tom Cruise with the David O. Selznick achievement award in theatrical motion pictures; Mindy Kaling with the Norman Lear achievement award in television; Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy with the milestone award; and the film Till with the Stanley Kramer award.
