Dec. 5 marks Repeal Day in the US, honoring the day Prohibition ended and the 18th amendment was repealed. What many people do not know, however, is that Prohibition was a vital time for the creation of some of America’s favorite pastimes, racing included.

NASCAR was founded during this era, when bootleggers would be forced to drive at high speeds to get away from lawmakers. They began racing one another, and started the racing league as a result. Esquire Network, in celebration of Repeal Day, gave a history lesson today with its video, above, detailing the start of NASCAR during the Prohibition era.
